These handmade ceramic tiles, plates, vessels, and
ornaments celebrate life and the sacred. The work is inspired by
ethnic, native and religious spiritual traditions, sacred geometry,
and nature. Living images and symbols are created in clay for display
alone and in groups, for ornamentation or accent, and for integration
into tile back-splashes, fireplaces and building installations. Pottery
is a whole material, bringing together the elements of Earth, Air,
Fire, Water, and Spirit.
An original tile is hand-carved and then a press mold is made
for future copies. This is a technique that is used by many tile-makers
to produce nearly the same tile each time the design is pressed.
My preference is to use red earthenware in tile making. The color,
which comes from iron in the clay, lends itself to many sacred
themes. Custom work in other than the red clay may be possible.
With this fired red clay, I use glazes formulated from recipes
passed from potter to potter. In most cases the glazes have been
specialized to meet my color needs. I also use some and/or commercial
under glazes and glazes. See the color palette for examples.
The firing is usually done in an electric kiln. This produces
tiles that are durable but are not tested for freeze-thaw durability
and therefore recommended only for indoor use in winters when temperatures
dip below freezing.
In addition to the variety of images pictured and discussed I also have tiles based on Egyptian themes, Japanese Family Crests, other animal and nature-based designs, and yoga and major religious imagery. Plates and platter may also be designed and produced.
Where micaceous
clay is named, I have used precious material from New Mexico, either
on its own or with earthenware. After initial firing the pieces
are smoked or pit-fired. |
